Online Databases

The Burnside Library has long been at the forefront of providing information technology services - it was one of the first public libraries in South Australia to provide access to CD-ROMs and on-line information, including the Internet.

These facilities and the library's commitment to its more traditional reference and lending services have won widespread support.

Library Edition

The Ancestry Library edition electronic resource is now available to patrons within the library.

This is actually a collection of databases aimed at those doing genealogy. While it is an American product, it includes some Australian (and UK) databases - for example Australian Electoral Rolls 1901 - 1936; Sands Directories for Sydney and NSW 1861 - 1933; Who's Who in Australia 1921 - 1950; Australia Convict Index, 1788 - 1868, and many more. There are more than 4000 databases and 1.5 billion names! Access is only available in the library - please ask at the Information desk.

Australian Bureau of Statistics

The Australian Bureau of Statistics website is committed to providing browsers with Australian statistical information. It also includes pages on ABS products and training, and information for small businesses and universities.

Choice Online

Choice magazine online is the electronic version of Choice magazine, published by the Australian Consumers Association. The database contains product tests and other consumer information and is updated regularly. The is a search box and other indexes to make finding information easy and product tests and other articles can be viewed and printed. Access is only available in the library - please ask at the information desk if you would like to use the database. Alternatively, staff can log on and use the database to find the information you need.

Commonwealth of Australia Law

ComLaw is the legal information retrieval system owned by the Australian Attorney-General's Department. ComLaw essentially brings low or no-cost access to the law for the community.

Electric Library

Electric Library has been established thanks to a consortium purchase by South Australian public libraries. This service allows you to search articles from major Australian Newspapers, journals, magazines, TV and radio transcripts and access image libraries.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online Library Edition offers three libraries: Encyclopaedia Britannica, Britannica Student, and Primary Britannica. Each provides a suite of features to browse the corresponding encyclopedia. Below is a summary of their features. You can search all of these at once, or individually. This is the electronic version of the popular Good Reading magazine. The current issue and past issues of the magazine can be searched and read online, and are presented in the same format as the print version. The magazine features reviews of fiction and non fiction books, articles on authors, the book trade and other book related topics. Copy, paste, print and email functions are also available. To access this database, have your borrower's card handy.

Health & Wellness Resource Centre

Use this Resource Center to find magazines, journals, newspapers, definitions, directories, and information on:

Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, Prescription Drugs, Herbal remedies, and alternative or complementary treatments, etc. Included are links to diet, cancer, and health assessment sites as well as government databases. Material contained in this Resource Center is intended for informational purposes only.

Internet Movie Database

The Internet Movie Database is a resource for every movie and TV lover. It is the world's most comprehensive movie website, and features news, lists, articles and facts about every film ever made and almost anyone who has been involved in the film or television industry. Just try searching for something Internet Movie Database doesn't have - you won't be able to!

Libraries Australia

Search the holdings of 800 libraries across Australia with one search statement and discover which libraries hold the resources you are seeking and from which libraries you can borrow the item or items! The Libraries Australia database contains the holdings records of State, Academic, Special and some public libraries and gives you access to information about more than 40 million books, journals, newspapers, pictures, maps and much more. Some material is in digitised form (over 600 000 of these resources) and is available immediately on-line. In other cases it may be possible to order copies of journal articles or other items on inter library loan for a fee, either directly or by enquiring at your local library in person . There may also be a link to on-line bookshops if you want to purchase a copy of the item(s) you have found in your search. Access to the database is free.

Here are some usage scenarios from the National Library's website:
Independent scholar: 'I'm writing a biography about Manning Clarke and I want to make sure I consult all the material written about him or by him. I would also like to find a photograph of him.'
High school student: 'My local library is very small and before I get dad to drive me 2 hours round trip to the nearest big library, I want to be sure they have something I can use for my assignment.'
Senior citizen: 'One of the best books my parents read to me as a child was one my mother had as a girl. It was an illustrated version of Grimm's Fairy Tales. Has it been reprinted so I can get a copy to read it to my grandchildren?'
University student: 'I didn't write down the complete citation for a work I used in my essay. It's now 2 am and the essay is due at 9 am.'
Family historian: 'My ancestors came from Castlemaine in Victoria . I am trying to ascertain which newspapers were published in the late 19th century and where I can access them.'
Parent: 'Our 11-year-old son is keen on Sudoku puzzles. We'd like to find the latest books and borrow them from a library for the school holidays. We might also like to buy one of the puzzle books.

Online Catalogue

Come to the library electronically! Search the catalogue for a publication, by title, author, subject, etc. or just look over the possibilities. You can also reserve all library items which are out on loan. A small fee applies.

Opposing Viewpoints Database

A database containing journal articles and other information sources on popular current affairs topics, such as abortion, birth control, capital punishment, pollution, smoking, war crimes, women's rights and many more.

Searching is possible using subject, keyword or by selecting from a list of topics.

The database contains more than two and a half million full text articles and is updated regularly. The articles retrieved often contain references for further reading. Useful for students studying current issues in society who want to gain a broad perspective on their chosen issue.

Pressdisplay

PressDisplay

PressDisplay gives access to more than 1000 newspapers from 82 countries in 39 languages. The papers are displayed exactly as they appear in print and the pages can be 'turned' just like a printed paper. Available on the day they are published the papers are kept for 60 days. An intuitive interface and easy to use navigation tools such as thumb nails and contents tables make reading easy. There is also a search facility using keywords. You can even have an article read to you by clicking the button called 'interactive radio' or translate the article into one of 10 major languages.  Access is available from within the library or from home. Papers include The Australian, The Age, The Advertiser, The Mail on Sunday (UK), The Vancouver Sun, The Los Angeles Times, The Press (NZ) Le Figaro (France) and the South China Morning Post.

PC Reservations

PCs can now be reserved in the Library for Internet Access and Word Processing. You can make one reservation per day. You will need your Library card number and a PIN to do this. Please see staff to obtain your PIN, which you can then change if you wish on the catalogue PCs located in the Library.

SACommunity Logo

SACommunity

SAcommunity is a database of South Australian community services including information about government, non-government, community based and some private sector organisations that provide services for the South Australian community in the areas of health, welfare, housing, education, community participation, information, legal services, arts and recreation. Searches on the site can be limited to Burnside (or any other council area), or across all council areas.

SA Libraries

SA Libraries website provides links to web sites on a variety of subjects, selected and assessed by public librarians in South Australia.

World Book Online

World Book online is the electronic version of World Book Encyclopedia. It is a general encyclopedia and contains up to date information on a wide variety of topics with text, pictures and animation.
