Unique playground opens in Burnside

Featuring play equipment of oversize proportions, Burnside's unique new Adventure Playground at the Kensington Gardens Reserve will provide entertainment for people of all ages, sizes and abilities.

The playground draws inspiration from the Reserve's nearby gum trees, and incorporates carved six metre high wooden logs that provide support for the swings and giant's platform.

Adelaide artist Gray Hawk, who worked closely with the Burnside Council during its construction, was responsible for the designs that appear on the logs. "This playground is ideal for kids with a keen sense of adventure," Gray Hawk said.

Council initially identified a number of different reserves within the City that could house such an adventure park. However, the Kensington Gardens Reserve was chosen due to the area having a nearby school and a kindergarten, and it being a park often used by families.

"We believe this Adventure Park is innovative and of great value to our younger community. Play is a key component in a child's development, and I believe this new facility will deliver stimulating and challenging experiences for all children in a safe environment. It is truly an investment in the future," Mayor Wendy Greiner said.

As part of a continual improvement process of the city's community infrastructure, several other redevelopments have also taken place at the Kensington Gardens Reserve.

The existing playground located in the eastern part of Kensington Gardens Reserve has been recently upgraded to meet new Australian Standards and a path constructed to link the two playgrounds. The public toilets now collect and use rainwater for toilet flushing and also provide disabled access and baby changing facilities. New free electric barbeques have also been installed throughout the reserve.

Mayor Wendy Greiner will officially open Burnside's new Adventure Park on Wednesday 8 December at 6pm. There will also be a free sausage sizzle and face painters. Nearby school students and residents have been invited and approximately 200 people are expected to attend.
