Burnside celebrates Australia Day 2005
Over 650 Burnside residents celebrated Australia Day in Hazelwood Park with the presentation of three major Australia Day awards and a citizenship ceremony for 50 people, followed by a BBQ brunch supplied by the Kiwanis and Burnside CFS.
Through the presentation of Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year and five Community Awards, Mayor Wendy Greiner recognised outstanding contributions to the Burnside community. Here are the recipients of the various awards.
Winner of the 2004 Burnside Citizen of the Year was Mr John Maschmedt.
John has worked tirelessly within his community for the past 17 years for the Dementia Association, Trees for Life, Milpara Residential Care Facility, Morialta Uniting Church Weekly Wednesday Lunch and Neighbourhood Watch. He is also a member of St John's Ambulance and the Carers Advisory and Advocacy Committee of the Alzheimer's Association SA.
In addition, John works each Friday in the Burnside Community Centre preparing meals and has a significant involvement in the smooth running of the Burnside monthly film afternoons. John gives 22 hours of his time per month to the Burnside community centre. He is also a carer for his ailing wife.
Winner of the 2004 Burnside Young Citizen of the Year was Mr Kelly Penn.
Kelly is an exceptional person who has just completed year 12 at Glenunga International High School.
During 2004 Kelly lead students at the High School in fundraising activities to help provide a school in North Africa with computers and other resources. Kelly dealt directly with the students, teachers and authorities in Africa with the implementation of the equipment and education processes. He has recently returned from visiting this school with 20 other students.
Earlier this year Kelly lead leadership activities in Beijing, China at Glenunga's sister school. He was a House Leader at Glenunga, runs many events including the Cabaret night to raise money for the school and also acted in the capacity as MC.
Kelly Penn was awarded the Caltex Best All-rounder Award for 2004. This award is the top internal award for Glenunga International High School and covers different attributes including: academic, sport, co-curriculum and leadership.
Winner of the Burnside Community Event of the Year is Club Slick.
Hosted by the Down Syndrome Society of South Australia, Club Slick was launched in 2002 as a monthly Rock 'n' Roll evening to provide increased opportunities for young (aged 10 - adult) people with Down Syndrome to socialize and develop skills that will enable them to participate in a range of community activities. Held in the Burnside Ballroom, the first event was attended by approximately 50 people. Each event is now attended by around 150 people and continues to grow.
In April 2004, 23 young people with Down syndrome and intellectual disability travelled to the 8th world Down Syndrome Congress in Singapore. The attendees participated in workshops and performed in front of 600 delegates at the congress dinner. Another highlight for Club Slick in 2004 was when ABC TV's Stateline program visited the club to document a story for broadcast.
In addition to winning this local award, Club Slick was also presented with the 2005 South Australian Community Event of the Year Award by the Governor of South Australia, Marjorie Jackson-Nelson at Government House.
The City of Burnside also presented five individual community awards, in recognition of service to the Burnside Community. The winners were:
Mr Alan Carr-
For long standing service to the Burnside Lacrosse Club, including 10 years as chairman and 25 as a committee member. He is also the only person in South Australia to have played almost 600 senior games for the same club.
Mr Bob Rowell-
Is a long-standing member of the Lions Club and has held a number of senior positions, including District Governor and Burnside Lions President. For the past 12 years, Bob has been responsible for the annual organization of Burnside's Christmas Carols in the Park, an event attended each year by over 3000 people.
Mr Murray Olsson-
Murray works as a volunteer in many different programs and is has been a bus driver for the City of Burnside for the past 12 years and is also a volunteer bus driver for the Cancer Council. Murray is also a registered Justice of the Peace working in Burnside's JP program. As a member of the Masonic Lodge and Foundation, he has spent countless hours supporting different charitable projects and the Prince Alfred College for over 55 years.
Mr Brian Sandow OAM-
Brian has held positions within Probus such as Secretary and President. He has worked with the Burnside and Norwood Payneham and St Peters Council, Cancer Council and Elder Care as a community bus driver and has held positions at Carrick Hill such as Committee Member and Secretary. Brian was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1998.
Mr Miles Rowland-
Miles has just completed year 12 at Pembroke College. He has been part of a successful Student Staff Executive, and an active member of several sports including Rugby and Cross-Country. He has also been a member of a rock band. He also spent hundreds of hours of his own time producing a high quality "School Leavers Video" for his peers. Miles is currently overseas and his sister Charlotte Rowland received the award on his behalf.
