Council Protects Burnside’s Heritage
Council Protects Burnside's Heritage
Burnside City Council is very pleased to announce the release of its draft Local Heritage Places No. 2 Plan Amendment Report (PAR) which aims to better protect the heritage of the City of Burnside. The PAR will increase the list of Local Heritage Places in Council's Development Plan to over 370, thereby ensuring that any development which affects a proposed local heritage place is appropriate and sympathetic to its heritage significance.
Mayor Wendy Greiner said, " This a significant step for the City of Burnside.
Our Council has been concerned for some time about the loss of many fine buildings and is taking measures to protect those that contribute greatly to the city's character and appeal.
"By listing buildings of significance in the Development Plan, we are fulfilling part of our responsibilities as custodians of the natural and built environment for future generations.
"Heritage listing does not mean that you can't make changes to your property. It simply ensures that the heritage significance of these properties is preserved, while meeting the needs of property owners at the same time."
Mayor Greiner said the heritage policies of State Government and Local Government should work in harmony. In essence, State heritage listings preserve buildings of significance to South Australia and Council listings will ensure those places of local significance are also preserved.
In addition Council is seeking to further protect local heritage places. Council is lobbying the Minister to introduce a more rigorous process for the assessment of applications seeking to demolish local heritage-significant buildings. This will prevent the situation that emerged with the demolition of Fernilee Lodge occurring in the future.
The listings and controls take effect immediately, but written submissions can be made during the public consultation period from 11 March to 27 May, 2004.
The draft PAR and associated Fact Sheet (which contains further information) are available for public inspection during normal office hours at the Council Offices and Library, both located at 401 Greenhill Road, Tusmore. The draft PAR and Fact Sheet can also be viewed on Council's website at www.burnside.sa.gov.au.
