Strength for Life program for over 50's

The Strength for Life program encourages older South Australians to attend strength training sessions by promoting the benefits of strength training to people over 50. The program aims to increase access to strength training programs for people 50 years and over by training and endorsing fitness providers to run sessions throughout South Australia.

  • Improve balance and reduce risk of falling
  • Enhance mental wellbeing
  • Improve body composition (more muscle)
  • Raise self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Reduce lower back pain
  • Enhance older people's ability to undertake activities of daily living and maintain an independent lifestyle

When are the sessions held?

  • Monday 9.30 am and low impact class at 10.45 am
  • Tuesday 9 am and 10.15 am
  • Wednesday 8.50 am, 10 am and 5.30 pm
  • Thursday 8.15 am, 9.15 am and 10.30 am
  • Friday 9.30 am and 10.45 am

Where are the sessions held?

Dulwich Community Centre, 14 Union Street, Dulwich

Each session consists of:

  • 10 minute warm up
  • 35 minute strength training
  • 10 minute stretching and cool down

A fee of $6 per session applies, a discount is available for 10 or more tickets purchased.

Before commencing with the Strength for Life program you will require one 45 minute appointment with one of our qualified instructors to assess your fitness levels and prepare your personalised program. A one off fee of $30 (cash) is payable to the instructor on the day of your assessment.

Personal Training / Small Group Training for over 65's

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding personal training and/or small group fitness classes for Burnside and Eastern Region residents over the age of 65. 

Small Group Training is a safe, fun group fitness class where you will learn and enjoy a circuit combining strength, cardio and flexibility workouts followed by a relaxing cool down and stretch. 

Sessions are run by a qualified Personal Trainer on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings; each session runs for 45 minutes and the first session is free. Plus ongoing incentives to keep you motivated.

Aqua Aerobics for over 65's

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding Aqua Aerobics for Burnside and Eastern Region residents over the age of 65.

The classes run for 45 minutes and are presented at a low level, however it is up to you how hard and fast you work. Classes are held at the Norwood Swim School, The Parade, Beulah Park on Wednesdays at 11am.

Cost is either $11.50 per class or a block of 10 is $80.00.

Boxing for over 65's

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding non-contact boxing classes for Burnside and Eastern Region residents over the age of 65.

Classes are held at the Dulwich Community Centre (Daisy Salotti Hall), 14 Union Street, Dulwich on Thursdays from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm.

Those living with Parkinson's Disease are encouraged to attend, as it has been shown that boxing can help to build and maintain strength, endurance and balance.

Cost is $15 per class.

Yoga for over 65's

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding Yoga classes for Burnside and Eastern Region residents over the age of 65.

Classes run for approximately 1 hour and cost $5 per class.

Held in the Community Hall at the Burnside Civic Centre every Friday afternoon at either 12.00pm or 1.30pm

Anyone who wishes to take part in the sessions will need to complete a medical clearance form prior to commencement.

Contemporary Dancing for over 65's

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding Contemporary Dancing classes for Burnside and Eastern Region residents over the age of 65. 

Classes run for 1 hour and 30 minutes and cost $5 per class.

Held every Wednesday morning at 9.30am in the Masonic Hall, 1 Fisher Street, Tusmore

Anyone who wishes to take part in the sessions will need to complete a medical clearance form prior to commencement.

Digital Drop-In Sessions for over 65's

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding Digital Drop-In sessions for Burnside and Eastern Region residents over the age of 65.  

Held every Thursday (School term only) with students from Pembroke High School from 1.45pm to 2.45pm in the Coopers Room at the Burnside Civic Centre

Burnside Briskers' Walking Group for over 65's

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme, in conjunction with the Heart Foundation, is running the Burnside Briskers' walking group for Burnside residents over the age of 65. 

The group meets Friday mornings at 8am at various locations, the walk is free of charge and comfortable clothing and footwear is recommended as well as a bottle of water.

Future Youth Initiative (FYI) Café

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme, in conjunction with Relationships Australia SA, holds a Community Lunch for Burnside residents who have a Seniors Card.

A team of students, supervised by a qualified chef, prepare a nutritious, delicious and affordable meal, while learning valuable skills and working towards a Certificate II in Community Services.

Held at the Glenunga Hub, Conyngham Street, Glenside; every Thursday at 12.30 pm. Cost for a two course meal is $11.00, or 3 courses for $15.00.

Pilates for over 65's

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding Pilates classes for Burnside and Eastern Region residents over the age of 65.

Classes run for 1 hour and cost $5 per class.

Held every Wednesday afternoon at 1.00 pm at the Glenunga Hub, 70 Conyngham St, Glenunga.

Anyone who wishes to take part in the sessions will need to complete a medical clearance form prior to commencement.

Come and Try Singing

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding a come and try singing group every Monday afternoon at 1.30 pm in the Burnside Ballroom, 401 Greenhill Road, Tusmore.

The group will run for 1 hour, followed by afternoon tea and will cost $5 per session.

Chess Group

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme is holding chess sessions every Tuesday morning at 9.30am in the Bill Dean Lounge at the Burnside Community Centre.

Sessions are free to attend and run for approximately 2 Hours. Coffee and tea is provided and beginners are welcome.

Knitting Group

The Burnside Commonwealth Home Support Programme holds a weekly knitting group for seniors aged over 65 who live within the Eastern Region.

Sessions are held every Tuesday from 10am until 12 noon at the Burnside Civic Centre and cost is a gold coin donation to attend.

Limited transport is available for Burnside residents who no longer drive.
