Cat Responsibilities

The City of Burnside has very little power when it comes to the management of domestic cats therefore our best tool is providing information to the community on how best to manage cats responsibly, so they are not a nuisance to the environment, wildlife or other residents and their pets.

Council Officers' only powers with cats are under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 in which we can lawfully seize, detain, destroy or otherwise dispose of an unidentified cat if found in an area that its removal is authorised for.

The Dog and Cat Management Board has developed a website which has very helpful information for cat owners called Good Cat SA . The aim is to make people more aware of responsible cat ownership and to avoid unidentified cats ending up in shelters with no means to reunite them with their owners.
