Contemplation

18 January – 8 February 2019

Opens: Friday 18 January 6 pm

Opening Speaker: Genevieve Theseira-Haese, Vice Patron of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts

In Contemplation each artist works in different mediums both in contemplative and reflective ways. Hugh’s work is enlargements of figure sketches produced from life drawings and converted into large paintings. David’s work is digitally enhanced pieces of vivid colour interpreted from the original natural world forms.

Hugh describes his creative process as, “Painters paint pictures, artists paint ideas. My art should always push the envelope and challenge my beliefs and draw me into areas which may not necessarily be within my comfort zone.” Hugh’s paintings of faces and figures are developed from drawings produced over many years. They are enlarged from their original ‘thumbnail size’ with colour intended to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. Ideas inherent in these pieces include: removing the role of photographs for inspiration, maintaining a purity of artwork from the original marks of graphite pencil, to the final marks of the brush, allowing ‘serendipitous’ mistakes and working with them, keeping things simple and adding only what is necessary.

David is an artist and photographer. He is presenting fine art photography from an assortment of experiences using macro to telephoto lenses. “Contemplation is a human emotion and is often in harmony with or an internal response to the space we find ourselves in. This eclectic collection is of observations in nine cities across seven countries shows human devotion, calm, power, complexity, simplicity, architecture, commerce and abstraction.”

David asks us to first look around the images, then stand close and stare into them for a minute. “Allow your peripheral vision to take over and see where it takes you. Some of the images are simple, some are complex, there are recognisable objects and others are ideas. If your mind rests somewhere, the image and your presence took you there. Enjoy the experience.”
