Anita Russell  - Rope Baskets

“I was born and bred in the Netherlands and came to Australia in my twenties.
My dad was a ‘kleermaker’ (tailor) and my mum had a passion for sewing, knitting and painting, so creativity is in my blood. I have an insatiable desire for making beautiful and practical objects.
I am mainly self-taught, working from my studio in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, but have learned also from various courses, workshops and even little internet tips. I enjoy working with natural materials like wool, cotton, leather and paper, and I will upcycle thrift shop finds whenever possible (I can spot a good quality zip from a mile away!)
In the 1990s I started selling my paper crafts in markets and other outlets. More recently I was inspired by a new craft market to develop my own range of rope basketry. The rope is made from unbleached cotton which I machine stitch together.
It is wonderful to see them take shape. All finished baskets are treated with a fabric protector so they are truly useful as well. Adding
the fine details is my greatest joy; it is what gives my work that personal touch and finished look. In addition to the making side of my
arts practice I have also conducted workshops for all levels of experience in paper-bead jewellery and rope baskets.
I hope you enjoy what you see and if you purchase one a great tip for keeping it beautiful is to use warm soapy water and a toothbrush to
remove any marks as it goes through life with you.”
