"I have always enjoyed being creative. Pottery in the 70’s, Silver-smithing in the 80’s, but my interest in Millinery only came about 10 years ago when I moved to Coffin Bay. In order to meet more ladies in the area I joined a group called “The Red Hatters”. Red hats were not easy to come by locally, so I decided I would have to make my own...which I quite enjoyed, and made a new hat for each month. My headpieces were admired by the rest of the group and I was soon asked if I would take orders. This started my beginning in the wonderful world of Millinery.
I predominantly use Sinamay, Crinoline and Jinsin and an assortment of materials for handmade flowers, and of course feathers. Mostly I am self-taught, but had a couple of Interstate weekend workshops during the early days. Nowadays I find the Internet a handy source of ideas.
While in Coffin Bay I also joined the local Textile Craft Group and became very interested in felting. As a group we were given the opportunity to take over one of the local shops, which we did with great success. We were 8 participating artists covering a wide range of crafts. My headpieces sold quite well, going to various race meetings around Australia and even one to Ascot."
