Michael Kayser - Woodwork

“I was born in Germany and began my apprenticeship in toolmaking at the age of 14. In 1983 I immigrated to Australia and have worked as a toolmaker since then, to the present day. I became an Australian Citizen in 1989 and I like to say I am “an Australian - made in Germany!” Following a cycling accident, I began working with wood to compensate for my inability to participate in cycling. Initially I produced pens, taking pride in producing a high quality finish. As my self-taught skills and knowledge have improved, I have begun creating bowls, plates and more recently, free-form pieces. Working with wood gives me immense satisfaction as I endeavour to accentuate the natural power and beauty of each unique piece. I take my time becoming familiar with the grain and character of the wood, be it stylish, peaceful, curious or dramatic. The final finish is achieved through many hours of patient work. It is, after all, a labour of love!”
