Alana Preece - Felt Paintings and Jewellery

“I have always been a ‘maker of things’ and over the years have encompassed many creative disciplines - ceramics, fibre arts, photography, stained glass, painting, sculpture, mosaic mirrors and more recently nuno felt.

Graduating from the Tasmanian School of Art in the 1970s I was a high school art teacher, then graphic artist for the State Library of Tasmania, before moving to SA in 1986.

The colours and wide horizons of South Australia sparked my imagination and I began many years painting the world around me including interior murals in hospitals and special schools, sought after for their uplifting and therapeutic effect.

I believe in the ability of colour and line to affect the psyche and therefore affect the wellbeing of our mind body and soul. Through a sensitive use of colour, my artwork aims to bring the viewer/wearer to a quieter place where greater peace may be found.

Two years ago I learnt the ‘wet felting’ technique and instantly loved the organic process. Although wary of taking on another artistic discipline I soon realised that rather than being ‘another string to my bow’, the felting technique was the actual ‘bow’ which brought many of my ‘other strings’ together, thus making beautiful music possible.

The nuno felt wearable art pieces on show are a three-dimensional extension of my decades of painting. In these, I feel my artistic expression has come full circle.”
