Habitat Restoration Grants
Private land contains important habitat in the City of Burnside. There is great potential to increase the quality and quantity of this habitat. Council conducts a Local Native Plant Giveaway and provides Habitat Restoration Grants to support the improvement of habitat on private land. The grants enable eligible private landowners to remove woody weeds and facilitate local native planting.
Eligibility criteria for Habitat Restoration Grants:
- Properties larger than 4,000 square metres with at least 1,000 square metres of potential habitat;
- Works must improve conditions for native fauna through woody weed control and/or local native plantings;
- Matching funding must be provided by property owners;
- Potential applicants must discuss their application before applying, with our Conservation Programs Team, to ensure it complies with the criteria; and
- Must meet all other criteria outlined in Habitat Restoration Grant Funding Guidelines(PDF, 390KB).

Examples of restored habitat
The Habitat Restoration Grants were trialed during 2023-24 and 2024-25. During the trial, ten grants were approved and 7,500 square metres of woody weeds were removed. Over 500 plants were provided to the grant recipients. These plants were grown by volunteers at Council's Local Native Plant Nursery.
The photos below are of the land where over 700 square metres of pest plants were removed and replaced by plantings of local native species.
