Accessibility

We believe playgrounds should be accessible and welcoming to everyone, and follow the State Government's Inclusive Play Guidelines. That's why:

  • Wherever possible, playgrounds are connected to formed pathways, based on the park’s level of service.
  • Designs consider safe movement within the playground, especially during busy times.
  • ‘Access for all’ equipment is included in district and regional playgrounds.
  • Where accessible equipment is provided, we also consider:
    • Appropriate pathways and surfacing
    • Car parking and amenities
    • Relevant standards like AS/NZS 2890.6-2009 and AS 1428 (Parts 1–5)
    • Adequate seating
    • Accessible toilets

Diversity in Play

Each playground is designed to be unique, offering a wide range of play experiences. Playgrounds are vital for the health and wellbeing of children, youth, and families. According to the Australian Government Department of Health, children aged 5-12 years should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.

With smaller backyards and more screen time, public playgrounds are more important than ever. They encourage families to get outside, move, and connect with nature. Our designs blend structured and unstructured play with the surrounding environment to support both physical and mental health.

Each playground is aimed at a specific age group. This ensures that all children in the community have a range of playgrounds that are best suited to their size and ability. In larger playgrounds, we aim to provide a range of equipment, so that there is something for all ages to enjoy.

Communication Boards

To support inclusive communication, several playgrounds feature communication boards. These boards use symbols, pictures, and words to help children with speech or language difficulties express themselves and interact with others during play.

Playgrounds with Communication Boards include:

  • Glenunga Reserve
  • Hazelwood Park
  • Kensington Wama / Kensington Gardens Reserve
  • Main Street Reserve
  • Penfold Park

These boards are part of our commitment to making playgrounds welcoming and accessible for all children.
