Calligraphy and Beyond Exhibition

‘Calligraphy’ literally means beautiful writing. It is one of the oldest art forms and is embedded in every culture that communicates, represented through a myriad of symbols and letterforms.

Western calligraphy is based on the Latin alphabet and has evolved largely over the past 2000 years. The creative opportunities afforded by engaging with calligraphy are joyfully and continuously explored by calligraphers globally, and also locally by members of the Society. The many styles of calligraphic ‘hands’ that you see in this current exhibition have been created through the essential human need to communicate broadly, artistically and individually.

Artistic exploration knows no bounds. While members produce exquisite traditional presentations of calligraphy from across the ages, the desire to delve into the possibilities beyond the traditionally expected are also featured. As a Society they are continually exploring the realm of varied media and materials, presentations and related practical arts. Their journeys will be never ending and present a snapshot of these journeys in this exhibition, Calligraphy and Beyond.
