Household Batteries

Batteries should never be placed in any bin as they can leach toxic chemicals, waste resources and pose a fire risk for waste collectors.

Through B-cycle you can recycle your household batteries for free at over 200 selected retailers. Visit https://bcycle.com.au/drop-off/ and search your suburb for your nearest drop off location.

It is important to apply clear sticky tape over the terminals of used batteries before disposing of them. This prevent the risk of fire. Different batteries have terminals in different places. Regular batteries like AA have terminals at both ends, while others, like 9-volt batteries, have two terminals at the same end. Button battery terminals are on the base and should be covered in clear tape on all sides.

Acceptable batteries include:

  • Button cells or watch batteries
  • Mobile phone batteries
  • Removable Power Packs from Electrical Appliances
  • Domestic batteries (eg AA, AAA, AAAA, C, D sizes)

Lead acid batteries are not acceptable.

Battery recycling at the Civic Centre is currently on hold and will resume as soon as possible.
