Magill Village Project

The Magill Village Partnership is a collaboration between the City of Burnside and Campbelltown City Council to investigate and identify the potential of the Magill Town Centre located around the intersection of Magill Road and St Bernards / Penfold Road east of the Adelaide CBD.

Both Councils have recognised that the area is rich in social, cultural heritage and presents a unique opportunity to create an exemplar ‘Village’ model that encompasses urban renewal streetscape improvements and urban landscape work. It can become a prototype for similar initiatives in other areas around Adelaide. A Magill Village Master Plan has been developed to achieve these improvements.

November 2022 update

Throughout 2022 the City of Burnside and Campbelltown City Council worked together to completely revitalise the Magill Village precinct and make the area a more attractive place to shop, stay and visit.

The redevelopment has delivered a safer and more accessible streetscape with additional pedestrian crossings, improved cycling lanes, a permanent 40k m/h speed limit through the Village heart, and new footpaths compliant with disability access requirements. Enhancements were also made to the Magill and Penfold Roads intersection to improve pedestrian, cyclist and driver safety.

New paving, landscaping, public art, bespoke street furniture and an innovative road paving treatment all combine to create a unique and inviting identity for the precinct, along with opportunities for vibrant street life, outdoor dining and pop-up stalls.

Environmental sustainability initiatives included the planting of 68 new trees, water sensitive urban design features to capture stormwater, electric vehicle charging stations, and planted traffic islands.

Council is excited to unveil the completed works in December 2022, with the revitalised precinct now providing a vastly improved experience for visitors, shoppers and residents. This project was funded by the Australian Government with $2 million from the Federal ‘Community Development Grant Programme’ and $5.75 million from the State ‘Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program’.

Penfold Road/St Bernards intersection to Vine Street

At the east end of the project from the Penfold Road / St Bernards Road intersection to Vine Street, all of the major civil work and the installation of the cabling is now completed.

Final electrical testing will soon be taking place in preparation for connection to the underground power supply. 

Over the next three months, SAPN’s electrical contractor will be making contact with property owners and residents about this new connection before being changed over to the new infrastructure.

Penfold Road/St Bernards intersection to Windsor Avenue

At the west end of the project from the intersection to Windsor Avenue, the civil works are ongoing and due to be completed in August.

Trench construction will continue on the road way on both sides of Magill Road and part of side streets to house the underground power lines. New electrical pits will be constructed in the road verge, and new trenches will connect the pits to the main power line trench.

To minimise the impact of these construction works on residents and businesses, the trenching and reinstatement works will be progressively completed in approximately 18 m sections within 50 – 100 metre work zones.

As sections of civil works are completed, cable installation will closely follow. Concurrently with the works, as sections are energised, the residents will be contacted to have their power changed over.

Stobie pole removal 2021

Following the connection of properties to the new underground power lines, the redundant Stobie poles will be removed. It is expected that removals of the poles will commence in October on both sides of Magill Road, both east and west of the Penfold Road/St Bernards intersection.

How will this affect you?

During these works access to properties, on-street car parking, footpaths and bus stops will be temporarily impacted as each section is undertaken progressively along Magill Road.

Access to properties will be impacted for approximately 1 – 2 days. SAPN’s civil contractor will provide advanced notice of work commencing adjacent your property, to enable businesses and residents to make alternative arrangements for access and car parking.

Detours will be in place on footpaths for pedestrians; and bus stops will temporarily be relocated as required.

There may also be short term lane closures on Magill Road and speed reductions will be in place on Magill Road adjacent the progressive work zones; please take note of changed traffic conditions when driving on Magill Road.

Should nightworks need to be undertaken, SAPN’s civil contractor will provide advanced notice of work commencing adjacent your property.

Some civil work will be required on most properties as the new underground services are connected to the properties. SAPN’s electrical contractor will be making contact with property owners and residents about this new connection before changing it over to the new infrastructure to account for any owner or heritage requirements.

During connection of properties to the underground power lines there will be impacts to power supply.

Although unlikely, due to the complexity of this project there may be occasions when power will need to be turned off for the safety of workers.

19 January 2022 update 

Work has commenced on the Magill Village Project. 

Stage 1 construction works started 10 January and are due to finish mid-February 2022.

Hours of work will be Monday to Friday 7 am to 5 pm, with the potential for some works to be undertaken on weekends as required.

These works consist of stormwater upgrade and the installation of a new under road stormwater pipe, located along Magill Road between Lorne Avenue to St Bernards Rd intersection.

Driveway access will be impacted for short periods during working hours. Access will be maintained to properties at all other times.

Stage 2 construction works are due to commence within the following two weeks.

Stage 2 works consist of kerbing and pram ramp upgrades at the St Bernards and Magill Road intersection.
